WHAT IS TECHNE?

Techne was founded in 2010 by Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones, educators and musicians active in electronic music communities in the US and abroad.

TECHNE is a national education organization whose goal is to close the gender gap in technology oriented endeavors, and create agency for a diversity of participants in technical fields. Our primary programs introduce young female-identified women and girls from all backgrounds to technology-focused art making, musical improvisation, and community building. As part of our effort to embed social justice principles in our work, TECHNE delivers its programming through partnerships with local, grassroots arts organizations that share an aligned commitment to racial and gender equity.

Our workshops combine organic, analog and digital materials as tools for expression, and incorporate musical improvisation, contemplative practice and social justice educational components. Immersion in this combination of activities contextualizes technical tools, and engenders listening, dialoguing and vocalizing skills. Students emerge with a stronger sense of confidence in themselves, and a greater awareness of how to engage in group dynamics.

TECHNE’s mission is to democratize technical tools within a safe environment for exploration, risk taking and creative expression.
