Andrea Neumann/Bonnie Jones green just as I could see

green just as I could see, CD release, Andrea Neumann: inside piano, mixing board and Bonnie Jones: electronics,  Erstwhile Records, 2012.

Jones and Neumann have been collaborating since since 2007 when they met at the Seattle Improvised Music Festival and performed together for the first time. Their decade+ collaboration has resulted in numerous performances and presentations in the US and Europe in addition to two recordings. One duo recording on Erstwhile and one trio with saxophonist Christine Abdelnour on Olof Bright. Jones and Neumann’s duo explores the expressive range of timbres between electronics and amplified strings, using feedback (mixer, delay pedal), handmade and circuit bent electronics, a custom piano sound board instrument, microphones, radios, and sometimes voice.

“The four pieces here are highly active improvisations with a rich sonic palette: the static, sputter, and crackles of Jones’ electronics play off Neumann’s hanging string sounds, scraped textures, and jangles. The two avoid conversational interplay, instead looking for organic ways to create a unified voice out of intermingled streams … This is an unmissable encounter between two very distinctive musicians, and Erstwhile’s usual impeccable recording reveals every nuance of it.”
