untitled (for Cynthia Gray)

Text video, audio, EARS BACK, EYES FORWARD: VIDEO SHORTS FROM MUSICIANS AND OTHER LISTENERS, Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia. 2015

untitled (for Cynthia Gray) is posthumous collaboration with NYC-based poet Cynthia Gray. In late 2013, I created two videos for her online project “Machine Writing.” The pieces used extensive audio recordings and texts generated from a six-month period where Gray carried around a recorder and documented her day-to-day life. After her sudden passing in 2015, I returned to her recordings to create this memorial project, untitled (for Cynthia Gray). The audio in the video was recorded by Gray on June 29, 2013, at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, NYC during the EXPO 1: New York exhibition that focused on art and the environmental crisis. An artwork of note on display was Olafur Eliasson’s “Your Waste of Time”, an installation of blocks of ice from the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland, said to have been formed in the 12th Century. That same day, I was participating in a project called colony, where a group of artists lived for a week in the courtyard of MoMA PS1 in a makeshift camp. Though we did not physically meet, at different times that day we occupied the same spaces, listened to the same sounds, viewed the same icebergs, and moved through the same corridors. This was the closest Gray and I had come to a meeting during our collaboration.

This work is a virtual meeting in the museum, our ghosts lingering in the hallways and stairways.
