Text video, audio, EARS BACK, EYES FORWARD: VIDEO SHORTS FROM MUSICIANS AND OTHER LISTENERS, Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia. 2015
untitled (for Cynthia Gray) is the final work in a writing collaboration with poet Cynthia Gray. For a six month period, I asked Cynthia to carry a small hand-held recorder and when inspired, to record audio and text and observations and fragments from her day-to-day life. I listened to these recordings and created improvised and collaborative text videos.
The video below, created shortly after Gray’s passing in 2015, references Cynthia’s visit to PS1 MOMA in the summer of 2012 during the EXPO 1: New York exhibitions. On display was Olafur Eliasson’s “Your Waste of Time”, featuring ice from the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. During that same summer, though we did not meet at the museum, I was part of the colony exhibit, where artists were asked to live in the courtyard of the museum in a makeshift camp for a week.
This work is a virtual meeting in the museum, our ghosts lingering in the hallways and stairways.
