Soy Sos and STAYCEE PEARL dance project are back at it with the development of a new project, sym. Join us for a live experimental sound and light centered performance project featuring Soy Sos, Bonnie Jones, and Sadie Powers.

sym. is a continuation of our previous project OCTAVIA, which debuted in Spring of 2011 at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater where we explored the work and life of Octavia Butler, esteemed African-American science fiction writer. With sym. we look to her vampire themed novel, Fledgling, to dig deeper into a recurring theme in her work: symbiosis.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American improvising musician, poet, and performer working with electronic sound and text. She performs solo and in numerous collaborative music, film, and visual art projects.

Sadie Powers is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, specializing in upright bass and fretless bass guitar. Her music focuses on the tension created through small movements. Powers currently tours as a member of the indie rock band Shearwater.

Herman Pearl (Soy Sos) is head engineer and owner of Tuff Sound Recording, as well as sound designer and co-founder of PearlArts Studios, a sound and creative movement company he formed with his wife, Staycee Pearl. Through PearlArts, Herman creates soundscapes to serve as a component to contemporary dance.

TECHNE in Chicago & Detroit

I’ll head to Chicago and Detroit with Suzanne Thorpe and our TECHNE organization to teach young students at GIrls Rock Detroit, Girls Rock Chicago, and to initiate a new program we can Teach the Teachers. This program is designed to get educators in cities across the US trained in TECHNE’s unique pedagogy and workshops.

Move Move Collaborative Presents Improvisations

The Move Move Collaborative is a temporary ensemble that has met to train together, to eat together, and to perform together. On June 30th, we will be hosting a night of improvised music and dance. There will be five sets. Each 15 minute set will feature a combination of musicians and dancers.

Ken Vandermark / Nate Wooley Duo

Chicago saxophonist/composer Ken Vandermark and New York trumpet stalwart Nate Wooley are both internationally known and lauded improvisers dealing directly with each other’s iconoclastic compositional and improvisational vocabularies.

Vandermark and Wooley have worked together to create an organic combination of the jazz tradition, free improvisation, and modern composition, and have then placed it into the raw and intimate context of this duo.

Bonnie Jones / Janel Leppin Duo

Bonnie Jones is a Baltimore based Korean-American writer, improvising musician, and performer working primarily with electronic music and text.

Cellist, vocalist and composer Janel Leppin is a highly developed, innovative artist with a musical style that is as unique as it is captivating.

The two meet for the first time in this DC-Baltimore power duo of high-level improvisation.

Standing Waves #7, Lecture and Concert Series

Standing Waves is a monthly music, sound, and artists talk series with a concentration on one artist in the performance of and presentation about their work. Standing Waves is given over to a single artist for each event that allows for the performance and auditioning of their work as well as a presentation to the audience about it that makes for an intimate as well as rigorous experience, with the integrity and intention of the artist and work aligned and revealed. A distinguishing element of the series will also be a document in the form of a book that includes critical writings and photographs from the events. This comprehensive approach will elucidate the music, sound art and practices that overlap and comprise the artists’ works.

Dani Leventhal’s films make palpable the emotional life of disparate animate and inanimate worlds. Using both scripted and found source material, Leventhal creates complex layers of meaning through montage, rendering micro-narratives of mortality and desire.

Breaking the barrier of what is possible to do with twelve strings, ToTi is presenting a combination of latin rhythms, with samba, Bossa Nova, electronic music and improvisation. Maurício Takara plays an electrify cavaquinho (traditional Brazilian small guitar) and his own creation: an electrify skateboard turned into a rhythmical instrument, while Henrique Diaz control and process a cuatro, a type of Latin America acoustic guitar.

A weekend of new electronic music and ideas comes to JHU. New Forms/New Paths is a weekend-long event sponsored by the JHU DMC, which focuses on new directions and ideas at the cutting edge of electronic music. It will feature a diverse group of artists and researchers ranging across age, race, and gender. Rather than focusing only on tools and technological concepts, New Forms/New Paths also considers personal history, identity, and global economic and political changes as the combined materials of contemporary musical innovation. Become aware of emerging ideas in contemporary electronic music regarding style, aesthetics, politics, and personal growth.

Thomas Stanely Ph.D., Tara Rogers Ph.D. and Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones of Techne are explorers of electronic media who write and think about music and technology with an ear to history, politics, engineering, and innovation. As artists, they are individuals who have worked in the avant-garde, performing all over the world and spreading the news of radical new music.
