EARS BACK, EYES FORWARD: VIDEO SHORTS FROM MUSICIANS AND OTHER LISTENERS
A video reel curated by Mike and Linda Aubry Bullock
Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia PA
February 6 – March 1

Mike and Linda Bullock

Ears Back, Eyes Forward brings together 11 artists whose video works engaged us in the past year. Most of the artists represented have strong sonic roots and branches in their highly varied outputs. Even those who may not consider themselves sound artists produced pieces with a canny ear for detail and timing. And throughout, they use sound and silence to take a listen back onto memories of communication, loss, and transition.

Featuring works by:

Malcy Duff [Edinburgh, Scotland]: Snowcone
Dina Kelberman [Baltimore, MD]: Colors Movie
Naomi Yang [Cambridge, MA]: Furrows Again (music by Richard Youngs)
Neil Young Cloaca [Turners Falls, MA]: Impractical Palynology
Seth Cluett [Montclair, NJ]: Recollection
Vic Rawlings & Jeff Silva [Easthampton & Boston, MA]: Excerpts from 215 Dead End Road
Camille Escudero [Brussels, Belgium]: Vacillements de Rétine and Selfie Board On
Mazen Kerbaj [Beirut, Lebanon]: Inkology (in four movements)
Bonnie Jones [Baltimore, MD]: Unititled (in memory of Cynthia Gray)
C. Spencer Yeh [Brooklyn, NY]: Landscapes and Subtitles
C. Spencer Yeh is represented by Electronic Arts Intermix (eai.org)

Total time: 56 min. 33 sec.

TECHNE & Girls Rock Camp Electronic Music Workshop Tour

mainimageindie

TECHNE presents…

ARISE: A Dynamic Musical Environment for Change  is an innovative electronic music program created by arts organization TECHNE, founded by musicians Bonnie Jones & Suzanne Thorpe. ARISE is an ecosystem of interconnected music, technology, and arts events that explore social identity through electronic music and improvisation.

Working in collaboration with local Girls Rock Camps and concert venues, TECHNE is giving workshops in DIY electronics, alternative instrument building and improvisation, and co-curating concerts featuring Bonnie and Suzanne in duo, plus local female artists. The workshops and performances, together, create a network of encounters that dynamically inform one another in the moment, and beyond, rippling outward to enhance the roles of women in technology and electronic music.

ARISE will be taking place in several US cities this summer. The tour includes workshops at Girls Rock Camps and local nonprofit arts organizations, and concerts held at local venues.

Workshops are only open to Girls Rock campers with the exception of the Bridge PAI workshop in Charlottesville, VA. All concerts are open to the public.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

SUZANNE THORPE (flute, electronics) is a musician/composer who works in a spectrum of modalities, fixed and improvised, installed and recorded. She plays electro-acoustic flute through an ever-evolving array of analog and digital effects, incorporating laptop upon whim. Her way is to listen for just-the-rightsounds and timbres, and the appropriate moments to introduce them to each other. Her composed works tend to be site-specific sound pieces that speak of, and with, their environment with an amalgam of sound sources, bringing forth moments of possibility and multiplicity. Her work has been shown and performed internationally, including All Tomorrow’s Parties (UK and U.S.), Roskilde (DK), The New Museum (NYC), Issue Project Room’s Floating Points Festival (NYC), Activating the Medium Festival (San Francisco), No Idea Festival (Austin), High Zero Festival (Baltimore), and exhibited at Klieo Gallery (NYC), Exit Art (NYC), Mills College (Oakland), California College of the Arts (Oakland) andmore.www.suzannethorpe.com/

BONNIE JONES(electronics) is a Korean-American writer, improvising musician, and performer working primarily with electronic music and text. Born in 1977 in South Korea she was raised on a dairy farm in New Jersey, and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. Bonnie creates improvised and composed text-sound performances that explore the fluidity and function of electronic noise (field recordings, circuit bending) and text (poetry, found, spoken, visual). She is interested in how people perceive, “read” and interact with these sounds and texts given our current technological moment. Bonnie has received commissions from the London ICA and has presented her work in the US, Europe, and Asia and collaborates frequently with writers and musicians. She received her MFA at the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College. http://www.bonniejones.wordpress.com/

Bonnie Jones and Andrea Neumann’s improvised music is a rich contradiction of textures and timbres with each artist committed to both defining and expanding the definitions of their music through long-term collaboration. The duo have been performing together since 2007.

Andrea typically performs on a custom-made Bernd Bittmann piano with no-input mixer feedback but for this duo tour she will be performing on a modified autoharp. Bonnie plays field recordings/samples and the circuit boards of digital delay pedals. The sounds produced by these instruments are often jarring and abstract but at turns equally melodic and complex. It is this sonic tension and contrast that the duo uses to create unusual musical dialogues and narratives in their work.

Bonnie and Andrea have presented their work in the US, Mexico, and Europe, most recently at the 2nd Festival International Cerro de Arena in 2012 held at UNAM, Tlatelolco, Centro Cultural Univerisitario in Mexico City, MX. The duo released their album green just as I could see on Erstwhile Records in 2012.

ARENA LADRIDOS

Chris Cogburn, Percussion
Bonnie Jones, Electronics, Mic
Bhob Rainey, Soprano Saxophone

In 2010, after years of friendship and musical intersections frequently revolving around Austin’s No Idea Festival, Chris Cogburn brought this trio together for concerts in Texas (Marfa and Austin) and Mexico. The trio brings together musicians who have performed and collaborated extensively in the improvised and experimental music communities of the US and abroad. Collaborating frequently with musicians like Greg Kelley, Andrea Neumann, Axel Doerner, Toshimaru Nakamura, Vic Rawlings, Christine Abdelnour Sehnaoui among others. Their music explores structure and gesture at a bare and measured level, negotiating the distinct and precarious relationships between sound, space, performer, and audience. Michael Rosenstein calls their work “a tightrope display of careful listening”.

The trio has released a CD on the UK label Another Timbre, information and links to reviews and samples follow:
